Abstract

Service systems such as hospitals typically involve multiple classes of customers, with servers differing in terms of their skill sets (i.e. which classes they can serve). We study the problem of staffing and scheduling flexible servers in the face of demand (arrival rate) uncertainty, and obtain asymptotically optimal joint staffing and scheduling decisions. Our analysis adopts a heavy traffic approach and provides prescriptive solutions to manage flexibility.
